A federal appeals court upheld a nine-year prison term Monday for a hacker who tried and failed to steal customer credit-card numbers from the Lowe's chain of home improvement stores.
….
Salcedo's attorney did not return a phone call Monday. Reached by phone, Timmins said Salcedo's and Botbyl's ultimate plan was to install the hacked tcpcredit code at all the Lowe's outlets, tapping into a torrent of credit-card data. "It was serious," he said. But he still wasn't expecting the sentence to survive appeal.

"I'm just kind of surprised that they upheld it," he said. "That's an incredibly long time."

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A judge on Tuesday erased the rape conviction of a man who was exonerated by DNA evidence after spending 18 years in prison.
….
Tillman was 26, living in a homeless shelter and working at a car wash when he was charged with abducting a woman as she got into her car near a Hartford restaurant, then beating and raping her at a nearby housing project. He maintained his innocence and rejected a plea bargain that would have given him eight years in prison.
